  • 1 day left - Get Counted! 5th Inventory - Net Zero & Net Zero Ready Homes

There is still time to enter or update your home/project in the 5th Annual Zero Energy Home inventory. The deadline is August 15.
According to the inventory director and author, Ann Edminster, M. Arch., “This year we are expanding our survey questions to identify critical factors like solar adoption and trends in electrification.” Edminster also notes that the new, enhanced online inventory input form allows users to add a listing in just a few minutes. Updating projects inventoried in earlier years is also much faster and easier now.
There are many categories - Team Zero’s goal is be as inclusive as possible. Projects can be in the planning stage, in progress, or completed. They can be net zero, net positive, or net energy ready, or high performance.
There is a 1000 Home Challenge category, including a) NZE verified for our NZE projects, b) THC completed (these count as Net Zero Ready) as well as pending projects in either category.
Your entry can help to increase the recognition and viability of deep reductions in existing homes.

  • Two more projects have been officially become the 29th and 30th home to meet the 1000 Home Challenge, and two more are in the final review stage. Stay tuned!

  • Two more projects have recently been approved as 1000 Home CHallenge candidates. We welcome Eric Johnson and Louis Iverson. Both are from western Ohio; Eric is from Yellow Springs, and Louis is from Radnor, OH. We look forward to learning more about their projects and progress.

  • Check out our latest case study - This DIY DER of a 1929 miner's cabin in the Colorado mountains is our first project from Colorado. As an ongoing work-in-progress, it is a Thousand Home Challenge Candidate. Since 2011 it has achieved a 51% reduction in site energy usage through the use of attic and wall insulation upgrades, air sealing, window replacements, and solar PV, as well as occupant efficiency strategies. A very-low-budget renovation, it makes extensive use of salvaged materials to keep costs affordable.

Congrats Bill Turner - 27th Project (1st in Maine) to Officially Meet the 1000 Home Challenge!

Check out 1) Attached energy use bar chart - 80% reduction of 2011-12 use.2)  Updated case studies: things inspired Bill Turner’s journey on the path to deep reductions in his home in Harrison, Maine.1)      He  got tired of using six cords of wood, (plus propane), to heat his home  2)      He discovered the 1000 Home Challenge.Since 2012 he has addressed air leakage and insulation with “strategic dense pack” through Curry Caputo and his company…

Weigh in - Honorable Mention? 2nd Base? Half-Way There? 50% Better? On the Path?

The Thousand Home Challenge is moving the category of recognition forward that represents "Half-way there".There is consensus that this category not be the same as meeting the 1000 Home Challenge. We are not lowering the standard (approximately 70% above average) for meeting the Challenge. There is much to learn from households that use half the energy as average Americans,  In many cases, contrary to conventional energy efficiency wisdom, they often have cost-effective opportunities to further…
