Scott Katznelson replied to Scott Katznelson's discussion Closed Crawlspaces
"Thanks. Interesting. Seems to consider balanced flow a lot but I've always considered it useful to have a positive pressure in the closed crawl. I'll have to look more into that."

Hey all. I'm putting this out there to get your opinions on closed crawlspaces. What to do? What not to do?My current plan follows Design Sample 2 from Advance Energy. https://www.advancedenergy.org/portal/crawl_spaces/pdfs/Closed%20Cr...;

Scott Katznelson replied to Tom Smith's discussion Are Energy Efficient Windows worth the investment?
"The calculation involves heat loss across the window. Calculate the difference based on the u-value of each window type. Calculation is also climate specific. Then translate that BTU difference into dollars based on fuel type used and cost per unit…"

Scott Katznelson replied to Tom Smith's discussion Are Energy Efficient Windows worth the investment?
"Despite many fine comments, in the end, you either run your home's data through energy modeling software or you're just guessing.
In most (but not all) cases, window replacement will not return a payback in energy savings within even 15-20 years."

Scott Katznelson replied to Jerry Needham's discussion Blower door test for small apartment building
"Most of the work I do is retrofit of older buildings. Marriage wall leakage is often significant, although typically more through duct leakage between units than through the wall itself."

Scott Katznelson replied to Jerry Needham's discussion Blower door test for small apartment building
"The most accurate way to accomplish this is to have 4 blower doors running at the same time, one for each apartment (maybe less, depending on the layout of the building). This is the only way to get individual infiltration numbers while eliminating…"

Scott Katznelson replied to Kevin Emerson's discussion Studies re: radon mitigation and energy efficiency
"I've read this article, too, and found it very informative. I now do not consider radon a major issue, certainly not at typical residential levels."

Scott Katznelson replied to Joseph Lamy's discussion TREAT - energy audit software
"I'm not a big fan of TREAT.  The biggest issue is that you have to true up the model to within 5% of the utility bill. A great idea except that, from my experience at least, the true up is just a random tweak here and there to make it work. No attem…"

Scott Katznelson replied to Dav Camras's discussion Experience with new energy monitoring tools such as Curb, Sense, Nerio and Smapee
"I’ll be watching to see what people say...
the only whole house monitor I’ve used was purchased about 5 years ago.  It was the TED Energy Detective (or something like that).  Very accurate - always within a few KWh of the utility bill.  But it’s abi…"

This thermal camera was purchased new and has rarely been used.  Out in the field only a half dozen times.  Battery charge has been maintained and there is no sign of reduced battery life.  Comes with everything the new camera came with - thermal ca…

Scott Katznelson replied to Robert Post's discussion Energy Auditing Software and Reporting
"I use NEAT.  I have taught the software across several states for the past 5 years, and think it does a good job of estimating the needs of the home.  It's Manual J is pretty close to a complete ACCA-certified software.  "

Scott Katznelson replied to Kevin Eigel's discussion What is the best energy auditing software?
"I have used many of the software out there.  There are paid modeling software that are quite good (probably my favorite actually is RESNET's RemRate, but you have to be certified with them to use it)
Mostly I use the free Weatherization Assistant.  …"
